WHAT IS ELT?

Expanded Learning Time (ELT) is an optional, free after school program led by MS 50 staff where students can choose from a variety of unique, engaging classes in addition to options for homework help and academic enrichment. Whether it is something you’ve always loved or a new skill you can’t wait to learn, check out the options for this spring below.

Please note, the following classes from the fall are no longer being offered:
JV Basketball (Varsity Boys and Girls will end after their season), Art Portfolio, Flag Football, Herbalism, Digital Activism, and Climate Warriors.
ENL has moved to Thursday and Yearbook has moved to Tuesday.

Yearbook has moved to Tuesday

*Interested students must attend a mandatory meeting the week of January 29th and a tryout which will take place the week of February 5th

    • Reading with Friends - Ortiz (Wednesday & Thursday): Do you want to strengthen your reading skills to become a better reader? Join reading intervention club to develop a love for reading and practice different skills to help you grow and perform better during the school day! We will read different high-interest books together.

    • 6th Grade ELA/Math Tutoring - Liu & Rodriguez (Wednesday): Do you want or need extra help with Math/ELA class? If so, we offer free tutoring services to help you on the path to success.

    • Homework Help - Atkins (Wednesday), Hazen & Vargus (Thursday), Santos (Friday, 6th Grade Only): Do you need a quiet, chill environment to do homework? Your ELA assignment is due soon? If you’re looking for a relaxing environment to do homework, Homework Help is the place to be!

    • Ayuda en Ciencia y Matemática - Zhañay (Friday): Science and math go hand to hand and it can be a challenge when you don’t know the language. I will be supporting in Spanish with homework for both subjects, as well as any other topics that you didn’t understand in class./ La ciencias y las matemáticas van de mano y puede ser un desafío cuando no se conoce el idioma. Estaré apoyando en español con las tareas de ambas materiales, así como cualquier otro tema que no hayas entendido en clase.

    • ENL for New Students - Abergas (Wednesday): Learn basic English language skills for social communication and cultural adaptation by engaging students in a fun non-academic learning activities.

    • Dragon Ball Z Club - Ortiz (Friday): Dragon Ball Club is a place for any student who enjoys anime, manga, drawing, games, etc. We are super-friendly group who enjoy experiencing and learning about Japanese culture through media of Japan. It is safe and fund space for students looking to connect with others and share their enthusiasm for anime.

    • Herbalism - Erazo (Thursday): In this introductory herbalism class, students will gain familiarity with different plants, herbs, and flowers that can be used for medicinal benefits. Students will be encouraged to reflect on traditional medicine practices used in their own homes and cultures. With a particular focus on plants that grow locally in the Northeast, including mugwort, raspberry lead, elderberry, and dandelion among others, students will explore themes related to urban agricultures

    • Harry Potter Reading Club - Santos (6th Grade Wednesday, 7th Grade Thursday): Come and immerse yourself in the wizarding world of Harry Potter!

    • Book Clubs - Rodriguez (Thursday): Do you love to read? Do you love to discuss? Come on an join book club! We will choose a novel to read as a group and will engage in discussions, debates, and creative activities around the novel.

    • SHSAT Prep - Smith (Wednesday 10/4-11/1): Note - This class is for 8th graders who are interested in taking the Specialized High School Admissions Exam. It will be on Wednesdays from 2:40 - 5:00 from October 4 through November 1. Students must commit to staying until 5:00. The SHSAT is on November 8. This class will be an exciting partnership with Brooklyn Latin High School. 15 Brooklyn Latin students will come every Wednesday to provide one-on-one tutoring to 8th graders who sign up for this class. We will do a similar SHSAT class in the Spring with Brooklyn Latin tutors for 7th graders.

    • Lit Magazine - Kalish (Wednesday): Do you have a passion for writing essays, poetry or graphic novels? Do you want to strengthen your editing skills? Do you love to share great poetry and writing with friends? Come to MS50 Lit Mag! Together, we'll participate in fun creative writing exercises and encourage classmates to share their best writing. We will also design and publish the MS50 Lit Mag to celebrate the amazing writers in our community.

    • 3D Printing and Design - Zhañay (Thursday): Come and create some unique 3D models that stems from your creative mind!

    • Board Game Club - Flanigan (Wednesdays): We will play a variety of traditional board games and card games.

    • Board Game Club - Atkins (Thursdays): Looking to relax and unwind after a challenging day of school? Join my Board Game Club! We play UNO, Quick Cups, Taboo, Monopoly, Pictionary, Life and MORE! Watch out! It can get very COMPETITIVE! COME OUT AND ENJOY THE FUN on Thursdays!

    • Board Game Club - Young (Fridays): If you love boardgames, this is the place for you. Once a week, you can get together with your friends and play together! There will be a bin of various games like Uno, Trouble, Twister, etc. Come hang out and make some new friends after school!

    • Math Tutoring - B-Lindor (Thursdays): Need extra practice in math? Come on Thursdays for tutoring and more!

    • Drama - Stripp, Spry, & Bosch (Wednesday): Love to sing, act, or dance? Join drama to be a part of this year’s musical, The Lion King! Be a part of the timeless story and bring the Circle of Life to MS50's stage! It doesn’t matter if you are brand new to acting or if you have performed many times before, there is a spot for you on stage. Please note, an audition on Friday, September 29th is required to sign up.

    • Theatre Tech and Design - Stripp & Lee (Thursday): Want to be involved in all of the work behind the scenes for every event we hold in our auditorium? students in Theater Tech and Design will learn how to operate the lights and sound and will run them for our shows! Students will also learn how to be stage managers, costume and set designers, and stage hands for our school’s performance of the Lion King this spring!

    • Drumline - Wareham (Thursday): Have you ever wanted to be in a marching band? Play a drum? Learn how to read music? Then join the MS 50 Drum Line! Students will learn how to play marching drums and perform at a number of school events throughout the year. No experience necessary and open to all grades!

    • Latin Jazz Ensemble - Wareham (Wednesday & Friday): If you play a wind instrument (trumpet, saxophone, trombone, etc) and are interested in taking it to the next level by learning to play jazz and Latin music, sign up for the MS 50 JazzBand/Latin Ensemble! We will work on learning to play songs from these genre's with performances throughout the year. Students with no wind instrument experience may also sign up if they are interested in learning how to play Latin percussion instruments (congas, bongos, guiro, clave, timbales)

    • Chess - Liu (Friday): Do you want to learn how to play chess? Then this is the club for you! How about if you already know how to play chess? Just a little? A lot? Self proclaimed master? Well, then this is the club for you too! Come learn how you can get better at chess and play with your peers (or if you're up for it... play against me!!). See you soon!

    • Cheerleading - Crawford & Patch (Wednesday & Friday): Come and audition for the MS50 Cheerleading team. MS50 Cheerleaders spread Warrior Pride for our major sporting events and enthusiastically move our with their energy and athleticism.

    • Muralistas - Matunis (Wednesday): MS50 students can unleash their creativity and artistic talents with this afterschool mural ELT activity. Be part of an environment that encourages teamwork, self-expression and community engagement through painting. Explore ideas and tips for implementing a successful mural project with your friends.

    • Art Portfolio/Drawing - Walzer (Wednesday)

    • Bead Making Club - Atkins (Friday): Are you looking to wind down after a long school week? Check out the Bead Making Club! Are you looking for a place to express your creativity and have a great time? Join us on Fridays!

    • Video Game Club - Iglesias & Norlandy (Wednesday): I’m hoping to bring a friendly environment for both casual and competitive gaming to kids who would like to test their frit against their fellow students, or to give kids a chance at gaming if they haven’t had access to it before. Decompressing amongst their peers around a video game console was a good way for me to escape the mundane and sometimes taxing rituals of every middle life, so I’m hoping it bring kids the same peace it once gave me.

    • Scrapbooking - Young (Wednesday): Scrapbooking will meet once a week. We will dig into the world of scrapbooking with all the materials you could possibly imagine. There will be stickers, gel pens, markers, glitter, stencils, decorative paper, glue, scissors, and MOST importantly, everyone gets their very own SCRAPBOOK! You get to choose what goes in your scrapbook, how you decorate it, and I’ll even print our photos for you! (Or you can bring them in!) Can’t wait to see you!

    • Sketching - Young (Thursday): Do you doodle on your free time? Do you ever start to create images that resemble real people or things? Do you already have your own sketchbook? Then this is the club for you. We will be learning different techniques to sketch drawing of real life images ranging from real people to inanimate objects or even landscapes! I’ll show you how to shade and blend as well as proportion your drawing space for human features!

    • Videography - Stripp (Friday): Become a TV professional at MS50! Our videography students will learn how to use and operate camera equipment, high tech audio equipment, multi-cam live streams and more! Students will film daily announcements, record school events and athletics competitions, and create a video yearbook!

    • Crochet - Spry (Thursday): Come and join our crochet club and learn how you can create clothing that you can wear. From designing the latest fashion trends to creating fun art projects.

    • Mindfulness Crafting - Spry (Friday): We will make beautiful homemade journals using every day materials we can find at home and school to make beautiful journals that we can use for reflection, planning or gifting! We will also learn how to make homemade stickers, antique looking letters and more! This is a great ELT for kids who love watching YouTube tutorials on different crafts and love making beautiful and useful things.

    • Yearbook Committee - Lopez (Friday): 8th Grade students get the opportunity to capture their middle school experience in the form of a yearbook. Students will be able to create, edit, and design the entire yearbook so that it is representative of the entire eight grade. If you are interested in creating a book you will cherish for a lifetime, join Mr. Lopez’s yearbook committee.

    • Photography and Filmmaking - Jake (Wednesday & Thursday): Students are provided a camera and a simple goal: explore the world through the lens. You will learn the fundamental technical skills of photography and filmmaking while being encouraged to discover your own style. Interrogate your surroundings. Document this moment. Share your perspective.

    • Ceramics - Walzer (Thursday): Students will explore three dimensional forms and create functional and sculptural works of art using clay.

    • RAPP Peer Leadership Club - Payne (Wednesday): RAPP Club is a space that will empower students to engage in healthy relationships and friendships. We will do this by. learning about relationship abuse, developing leadership skills, engaging in self- reflection and having fun along the way! RAPP Club will put on monthly events for MS50 where you will have the opportunity to educate your peers on issues related to consent, abuse, and healthy relationships in creative ways. Leadership is a huge component of RAPP Club and a great opportunity to become an influential students at MS50

    • DREAM Team - Cortez & Bosch (Friday): This club is a safe space for new arrivals, emergent bilingual, immigrant and undocumented students at MS50. We will build community, go on trips, advocate for your needs, and think about ways MS50 can grow to better support our communities. // Este club es un espacio seguro para estudiantes recién llegados, bilingües emergentes, inmigrantes e indocumentados en MS50. Construiremos una comunidad, haremos viajes, defenderemos sus necesidades y pensaremos en formas en que MS50 puede crecer para apoyar mejor a nuestras comunidades.

    • MS 50 Climate Warriors - Kalish (Friday): Are you ready to raise your voice for climate justice? Meet with MS50 students who are ready to take action at the local level to create real change. Together we will share our experiences, learn from local climate activists and decide on an organizing project to create real change. We'll also take advantage of the natural beauty of New York with special hiking trips.

    • Digital Activism Club - Patricia (Friday): Join the Digital Activism Club! Learn how to use social media for good and stand up for what's right. We'll teach you how to make awesome online posts, talk about important issues, and even make a difference in your community. Come change the world for the better!

    • Policy Debate - Vega (Wednesday in English), Vega & Bosch (Thursday in Spanish): Policy Debate is an advanced form of debate that is open to all grade levels. This ELT will take place on Wednesdays from 2:40 PM - 5:00 PM. If you are interested in deepening your research and analytical skills with the possibility of traveling throughout the year, this may be the perfect ELT for you. Policy Debate is a very big commitment and students who come to practice consistently and give their best effort are often the ones who find themselves getting the most out of debate. The more you put in, the more you learn and get out of it. We hope that you will join our Policy Team today!

    • Boys Basketball - Mason (Wednesday & Friday): Come and try out for the MS50 Boy’s Basketball Team. Our basketball team work on their skills and competes against other schools in the district and strive to bring home a championship to our school.

    • Girls Basketball Team - Whitaker (Thursday): Come and try out for the MS50 Girl’s Basketball Team. Our basketball team work on their skills and competes against other schools in the district and strive to bring home a championship to our school.

    • Soccer - Zhañay (Wednesday): Come and tryout for MS50 Soccer Club. Our soccer club looks to work on the skills that make a great footballer.

    • Flag Football - Molfetta (Thursday): Are you ready for some (flag) football? For the first time, MS50 will be forming a flag football team! ALL ARE WELCOME, whether you have been playing football for years or you want to start playing for the first time. We will meet once a week on Thursday and participate in drills to build skills.

    • Double Dutch - Walker & Pinkney (Thursday): We are more than a Double Dutch Club, it’s a community!
