Middle School 50: The Magnet School for Debate and Youth Leadership, also known as J.H.S 50 John D. Wells, is a small Community School in Brooklyn. Since forming a partnership with El Puente, MS 50 has not only become the Pride of the Southside, El Orgullo de Los Sures, but has become a model throughout the city for what a community school can be. The MS 50 El Puente community is leading the way with its holistic development of youth and parent leaders, a robust Integrated Arts Program, nationally competitive, bilingual debate team, college mentoring partnerships, rising attendance and test scores and so much more!

Our Mission and Focus

Our mission is to promote youth leadership through academics, arts, athletics, and activism and to empower student voice by providing opportunities for students to engage in inquiry-based and project-based learning.

In all content areas, we will teach students to make evidenced based arguments and to justify their opinions using persuasive academic language.   We will also provide our students with opportunities to make their thinking visible on a daily basis and integrate research proven culturally responsive education (CRE) practices into daily lesson plans.

We believe that promoting an understanding and respect for others and cultivating a diverse school community are integral parts of a high quality education.   Our school community, like New York City and District 14, represents diversity in every sense of the word (racial, ethnic, socio-economic, religious, gender identity, family structures, belief systems).  Our interdisciplinary, project based curriculum, with a focus on issues of equity and justice, is designed to deepen our students’ commitment to be advocates for peace and justice for all people.
