Spanish Dual Language Program
Dual Language immersion is a unique educational program that builds student bilingualism and bi-literacy in English and in Spanish. Instruction is provided by highly trained and caring teachers. Students continue to learn standards-based content while they become fluent in two languages; linguistically and academically.
Brooklyn Boatworks
Brooklyn Boatworks is a remarkable organization that empowers students in underserved communities through a unique boat-building program. Brooklyn Boatworks operates within New York City schools and educational organizations. Their school-year long program combines boat building, waterfront adventures, and exploration to teach students essential skills. These include STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) skills, social and emotional learning, and comfort in navigating the waterways of New York City.
During the crucial middle school years, Brooklyn Boatworks nurtures positive behavior development. Through sustained cooperation and teamwork, a class of 12 students collaboratively builds an ‘Optimist pram’ over the course of the school year. By engaging in hands-on boat construction, students not only learn practical skills but also develop confidence and a sense of accomplishment. This process encourages problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills. By working together on a tangible project, students gain a sense of purpose and responsibility, fostering personal growth and resilience.
Offering boat building to students with disabilities is important for their future because it provides numerous benefits that contribute to their overall development and well-being. Boat building helps students acquire practical skills related to craftsmanship, engineering, and design. These skills can be transferable to various fields and careers. For example, understanding how to measure, cut, and assemble materials can be valuable in construction, woodworking, or even architecture. They develop problem-solving skills by figuring out how to make their boats float, balance, and move efficiently. These problem-solving abilities are essential for success in any profession. Successfully building a boat fosters a sense of accomplishment. For students with disabilities, this achievement can boost self-confidence and encourage them to take on other tasks independently. It reinforces the idea that they are capable of overcoming obstacles. In summary, offering boat building to students with disabilities not only equips them with practical skills but also instills confidence, creativity, and a sense of belonging. These qualities will serve them well as they transition into adulthood and pursue their aspirations.
