Preparing Students for High School

High School Application Support

We are proud to have MS 50 graduates represented at schools across the city! We closely partner with all of our 8th grade families to help them prepare their high school applications and find a great match for them. The summer before their 8th grade year, we have virtual home visits with each family talking through the application process and discussing what types of schools may be a good fit. Each 8th grader is then paired with an advisor who will work with them directly to prepare their applications, identify possible schools and discuss ranking strategies.

Individualized SHSAT Tutoring

MS 50 partners with Brooklyn Technical High School for SHSAT tutoring in the fall and spring of each school year. Brooklyn Tech students serve as one on one and small group tutors to MS 50 students; 8th graders in the fall before they take the exam, and 7th graders in the spring. These students are supported by teaching staff advisors from MS 50 and Brooklyn Tech.

This one-on-one support has led to MS 50 graduates now learning at Specialized High Schools across New York City including Stuyvesant, Brooklyn Tech, and Brooklyn Latin.

Audition and Portfolio Support

MS 50’s arts department works closely with interested 8th grade students in the fall to help them prepare their art portfolios and auditions for audition schools. Students use the expertise of our visual art, music, dance, vocal, and theatre instructors to help craft audition pieces that reflect their strength and individuality as artists.

Our graduates are now in studios and on stages at many schools including LaGuardia, Frank Sinatra, Fashion Industries, Brooklyn High School of the Arts, Art and Design High School, and Edward R. Murrow where they are studying a range of disciplines including drama, instrumental music, technical theatre, visual art, dance, and more!
